While in high school, I had two friends that were graduating with me in the spring of '99. They were both receiving ragdolls as their graduation present from their parents. I knew nothing of these purebreed cats at the time, but they swore to me they were the best in the world!!
In the spring of 2002, my fiance and I decided to get a kitten and of course I remembered what my friends had recommended. I started to research the breed for myself in some bookstores and on the internet. Falling in love with what I read, I decided to purchase one. After an exstensive search for a great breeder near my area, I finally brought a kitten home in Sept 2002!!
Ragdoll cats are the largest cat breed, usually becoming full grown at 3 yrs of age. Females usually range in size from 10-15 lbs, while the males range from 15-20 lbs. However, there have been ragdolls reported at 28 lbs!! All Ragdolls are a pointed cat with blue eyes. They come in 5 colors: seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, and flame. Seal and blue are the traditional colors. They also come in three traditional patterns: pointed, mitted, and bicolor. There are also nontraditional patterns such as the lynx, tortie and torbie, and cream. The ragdoll's has a medium length coat that is low-shedding and low maintence. It resembles the techure of rabbit's fur, therefore it is very soft and not prone to matting.
Although the ragdoll is a beautiful, large cat, it's their personlity that has attracted me the most! The ragdoll is a very loving, sweet natured cat that is very social and "human oriented." Unlike most cats, this cat is very dependent on its owners. The ragdoll got its name for the ablity to relax all its muscles and go limp while being held due to its trusting nature. Because they are so docile and trusting, they are strickly indoor only cats!! Another unique characteristic of the ragdoll is its vocabulary. Ragdolls have a broad vocabulary consisting of chirps, squeaks and silent meows! They have a low voice and are not usually talkative.
